Feeding troops around the world

Basic training teaches you vital soldiering skills like how to survive outdoors and fire weapons. After mastering the basics you learn to cook at the Defence Food Services School in Hampshire. You get a thorough grounding in food preparation and presentation, and you also learn how to construct field kitchens and produce tasty, nutritious meals on the move.

CPL Johnston

“I first trained as an Army Chef when I left school at 16, but after a couple of years I decided to leave and try my luck in a civilian kitchen. Before long, though, I was getting ground down by the nine-to-five routine. I was bored – I'd made a mistake. I walked back into an Army careers office, rejoined, and I’ve never looked back.”
